Logan Christopher Hofschroer

Well, I'm not really sure where to start so I guess I'll just start with the basics. Most of you know that Amy was due on October 25th and that are little guy was running late. The doctors decided to try and induce her this past Sunday night and after a long Sunday night and Monday morning with little to no action, the doctors sent us home. They told us to come back on Thursday morning for a in-patient induction and that we wouldn't be leaving without a baby. Well, after 24 hours of hard labor, 2 1/2 hours of pushing, and no option of an epidural, Logan Christopher Hofschroer was born on Friday (11/6) at 11:57am. He weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.
Now that you have the basics, here is a little more info for you... After the doctor cleaned Amy up and everyone was out of the delivery room, Amy, Logan, and I were having some great bonding time. Amy was so exhausted and Logan was obviously hungry from the trip so Amy asked me to raise up the bed so that she could feed Logan and nibble on the food tray that the nurse had just brought in for her. As I raised the bed up, Amy felt a gush of something down below and I could actually hear it as well. I looked at Amy and she had no color in her face and told me that she needed me to call the nurse and take Logan from her. She told me that she just didn't feel right. As I got up from the bed with Logan in my arms, I went to call a nurse. As I walked to the door, I looked down and saw a pool of blood on the floor, on the bed, and all over Amy. Many of you know that towards the end of Amy's pregnancy her platelet levels dropped and dropped. As a result of these low platelet levels, the doctors told us that they would have to be cautious of not allowing Amy to loose to much blood as platelets are what causes your blood to clot and that her bleeding in large amounts could be a very serious issue. Well, we had a VERY serious issue. I grabbed the nurse and then she called for two more nurses. Within three minutes there were 3 nurses, a midwife, a couple of doctors, a surgeon, and an anesthesiologist in the room prepping Amy for surgery. Watching my wife loose that much blood right before my eyes as I held our brand new screaming child, I told the nurse to take Logan to the nursery as I wasn't feeling well. The nurse took Logan to the nursery as I sat and watched my wife be wheeled out of our room heading for surgery to stop the bleeding. For the next hour and a half I sat alone in our labor and delivery room as the doctors did exploratory surgery until they found the sources of the bleeding. Amy had an internal tear behind her cervix that the original doctor who cleaned her up could not have possibly seen. The surgery team did a great job stopping the bleeding and literally saving my wife's life.
Almost 6 hours after delivery Amy was wheeled into our postpartum room where Logan and I met up with her. Logan was doing fine, but Amy was still really out of it and I was absolutely exhausted. Jan, Amy's mom, was great and stayed the night with Amy so I could go home and get some rest. The next morning after I got back to the hospital, the doctor came in to discuss the possibility of a blood transfusion. The doctor told us that Amy had lost almost half of her blood the day before and that if her body didn't immediately begin to regenerate more blood that a transfusion was immanent. The hospital staff closely monitored Amy's vitals and helped her recover one step at a time. The doctor came back in a few hours later and told us that her blood levels were increasing and that she wouldn't need a transfusion. She will need to take iron supplements, monitor her diet, get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids and her body should be able to do the rest! Praise God for that!
The next couple of days in the hospital were great and filled with lots of friends and family and lots of probing and prodding of both baby and mommy. Our entire Kaiser experience was amazing and felt really blessed by everyone involved. Last night we were discharged and came home to a completely clean and decorated house (thanks Dutchers and Moss'!). We are all tired, but recovering well. Please continue to pray that Amy's hemoglobin numbers increase and that Logan continues to transition well to life as a Hofschroer.
God is so good and so faithful!

I got the scoop from your mom today, Amy, on her patio while the kids played with chalk (and Scout ate it) and was SO excited to see pictures of your cute little man. What a blessing to have him safely in your arms. I'm happy to hear that you are recovering well too. I hope you can enjoy taking long naps snuggled with your son without worrying about the little things that you might normally do. What a wonderful time!! Keep the pictures coming please... :o)
